The ARL is known for pet adoptions, but we do so much more! Join us for a monthly series on hot topics in animal welfare called “Beyond Adoption”.  These FREE 90 minute sessions will be geared towards ARL staff and volunteers, but are open to anyone who is interested in the topic that month.  Attendees are encouraged to bring snacks to share and there will be time allotted for Q&A.

Beyond Adoption: Animal Protection Legislation

Animal Rescue League’s Executive Director and animal rescue expert, Tom Colvin, will be presenting on current animal protection legislation in Iowa. Learn about the work the ARL is doing for animals on a state and federal level, where we are headed next, and what you can do to help! We will also explain the “hot topics” we are focused on and other issues impacting the animals in your state. 

Here are just a few examples of legislative efforts the Animal Rescue League of Iowa has participated in throughout history.

1993 - Mandatory spay/neuter law passed
1994 - Animal cruelty law (H.F. 637) passed
1997 - ARL sought custody of dog in Iowa court system
2000 - Felony animal torture law passed
2001 - Passage of law against bestiality
2002 - Bill introduced to make animal fighting a felony
2004 - Felony punishment animal fight law passed
2006 - Bill to have dogs classified as livestock defeated
2007 - Legislation banning exotic pets passed
2008 - Dangerous wild animals and Pet Protection
2009 - Puppy Mill Bill
2010 - Puppy Mill Bill signed into law
2011 - Additional Puppy Mill legislation
2012 - Whistleblower Ag Bill (against)
