The Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Inc. is proud to present our first Equine Investigations Academy in Des Moines, IA.  This intensive, 3-day academy is designed to equip law enforcement, animal control, and veterinary professionals working directly with law enforcement to investigate animal neglect and animal abuse cases involving horses from the initial complaint to resolution in the courts.

As more and more people become owners of horses, law enforcement around the State of Iowa is increasingly being called on to investigate allegations of neglect and abuse of horses in their jurisdiction.  Proper investigation of these cases requires that law enforcement be given the proper tools and knowledge in order to properly resolve these cases.

The following areas will be covered during the Academy:

  • Overview of the Horse
  • Horse Identification
  • Basic Horse Skills
  • Interviewing and Behavioral Analysis
  • Evidence Collection
  • Equine Veterinary Care
  • Henneke Body Condition Scoring
  • Property Inspections
  • Equine Nutrition
  • Emergency Care and Euthanasia
  • Foot and Leg Care
  • Search and Seizure Procedures
  • Courtroom Preparation
  • Media Relations
  • Loading, Trailering, and Transporting
  • Investigation Scenario
  • Actual Case Studies

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Inc. is fortunate to be able to provide instruction in these areas from recognized experts from Iowa State University School of Veterinary Medicine, the Des Moines Police Department Academy, Animal Rescue League of Iowa, and other experts in equine care.

The cost of this 3-day course is $150.00 and includes all training materials and lunch each day.

This is a unique opportunity to improve your agencies ability to respond to what is becoming an ever increasing concern for law enforcement.

We look forward to seeing you in Des Moines this coming September.  If you have any questions, please contact Scott Wilson at 515-229-7392 or swilson@arl-iowa.org.
