The ARL Assists in Rescuing 6 Injured and Significantly Neglected Horses in Union County

posted 12/12/2012

December 12, 2012 UPDATE: We have some good news and bad news to share. GOOD NEWS: The mare and filly who were taken to ISU large animal hospital on Friday (last week) are both doing well and are still under their care. The disposition hearing for who would take “ownership” of the horses was held on Monday (this week) and the ARL was awarded permanent custody of the horses. Yesterday in court, the now former owner of the horses entered a guilty plea to 5 simple misdemeanors, resulting in a fine of $325 + rescues costs and care for the 10 days leading up to the disposition hearing. BAD NEWS: Sadly, one of the horses rescued from the property has since died of his severe injury that had gone untreated for a very long time.

The remaining 6 horses now face a long (and costly) road to recovery before they will be ready for adoption. Thank you to everyone who has donated to our Barn Buddy horse rescue program over the past couple of weeks. Donations allow this program to continue. We will keep you posted on their progress.

November 29, 2012 (Des Moines, Iowa) – The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) in Des Moines assisted the Union County officials today to remove 6 injured and significantly neglected horses from a less than 1-acre property in Union County. The horses were relocated to the ARL’s Kruidenier Rescue Ranch at the Main campus, where they will receive needed veterinary care, food and shelter.

“These horses had been living without food, shelter and veterinary care for an undetermined amount of time. The horses now face a long road to recovery as we head into the coldest months of the year,” said Scott Wilson, Cruelty Investigator for the ARL.

“Twenty-four horses have been removed in partnership with law enforcement in the past 12 months alone,” said Tom Colvin, Executive Director for the ARL, “The cost to bring these horses from where they are now, to healthy horses that are ready for adoption is significant.”

The ARL is seeking donations for their horse rescue program so that they can continue to assist authorities when called, from all over the state. Donations can be made at www.arl-iowa.org (RE: "Help for the Horses") or mailed to:

Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Inc.
Attn: "Help for the Horses"
5452 NE 22nd Street
Des Moines, IA 50313

Once healthy, the horses will be available for adoption through the ARL’s Barn Buddy adoption program. Currently there are 13 horses available for adoption at the ARL.
