Guardians will learn how to teach their dogs in a ‘real-world’ setting using positive reinforcement methods which in turn will enrich their relationship with their dog both in and out of the home.
REAL LIFE CLASS is for dogs 5 months and older at the start of class. You have put in the hard work of teaching your dog basic good manners. Now, it’s time to attach “real life” aspects to those behaviors.
Real Life Class is designed to focus on real-world situations and teaching your dog the best way to behave in everyday life. We don't simply provide you with a list of behaviors - we show you when and how to use these new skills to get the behavior you are looking for in real life. Classes consist of 4 weekly sessions, each lasting about 50 minutes.
Each class will meet on the same schedule day and time once a week for 4 weeks. Location is subject to change depending on topics to be covered that week.
Topics to be covered will include, but are not limited to:
- Basic manners with no clicker and minimal treats
- Loose leash walking with distractions
- ‘Real-world’ walks
- Heel
- Dog-dog introductions
- Appropriate dog-dog interactions
- Problem solving
- Problem prevention
This class meets once a week for four weeks. Participants will be required to watch the orientation video prior to coming to the first class via the link below.

Does your dog consistently react strongly to humans or other dogs?
Reactive dogs have a hard time focusing on their owner during the class making it hard for them to learn and retain the information they are being taught. If you are unsure if your dog will be successful in a group training class, a Drop-In Training Class is a great way to see if your dog is able to learn in the busy environment our training center provides.
If you have any concerns about the behaviors your dog displays, please email dogtraining@arl-iowa.org or call (515) 473-9131.
