No matter how many times we see unimaginable suffering, it never gets easier.
When Birdie and Benji arrived at the ARL just a few days ago, our hearts dropped. Two small puppies, one very weak and in severe pain, and the other so near death he was unresponsive.
Both were suffering from major injuries and were nothing but skin and bones. According to our veterinarian, the nature and severity of the injuries indicated they likely were not accidental.
While help had sadly come too late for Benji, our team rushed to help Birdie, administering pain medications, starting IV fluids, and assessing her injuries. What we found was shocking: She was suffering from what appeared to be a broken jaw and a crushed sinus cavity, along with severe head wounds and swelling.
Not only that, our veterinarian estimates she was likely suffering from these untreated injuries for WEEKS. It was a miracle she was still alive.
We made Birdie comfortable in our Miracle Medical Ward, and are taking things day by day. Her condition is still very guarded, but in the few days she has been with us she has shown she is a fighter. Under the care of our expert team, her swelling has lessened, she has become more alert and has even gained a little weight. Even after everything she endured, she is incredibly sweet, giving us tail wags and rubs. She has a long road ahead of her but we are committed to doing everything we can.
Sadly, rescue did not come fast enough for Benji, but you CAN make a difference for Birdie.
