Full Time Volunteer Coordinator
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a vibrant and passionate individual to serve as a full time Volunteer Coordinator. This position prepares and leads approximately 3,000 volunteers to serve alongside ARL staff as we care for more than 11,000 animals who arrive at our doors each year. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Continually research innovations in volunteer management
- Recruit, supervise, evaluate and encourage volunteers in all ARL programs and all areas needed by the ARL
- Organize and conduct volunteer orientations
- Design and maintain volunteer application and screening process
- Design and maintain/update volunteer handbook
- Design, research and implement ongoing recognition and appreciation events and program
- Study and standardize volunteer procedures to improve efficiency
- Motivate all volunteers to meet and exceed ARL standards
- Coordinate volunteer operations with other departments/supervisors/program chairs
- Responsible for over-site of volunteer training by various departments
- Establish ongoing liaison with corporations, schools and other community organizations to facilitate recruitment of volunteers
Ideal candidates should have experience in leadership, community organizing, volunteer coordination, non-profit management, or related fields. Animal experience is not required. This position works in a fast-paced environment with sometimes short deadlines and works with a variety of staff stakeholders so demonstrated success in problem-solving, working both independently and within a team, and organizational skills are a must. Call Center Operator – Full Time
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Inc. (ARL) is currently seeking a full time Call Center Operator to receive incoming calls for our community outreach programs, facilitate phone calls providing resources to the community and support staff in the Pet Help Center. The ideal candidate has prior secretarial/call center experience, strong communication skills, is efficient, able to multitask, able to work well with others and is well organized, high energy and able to walk distances. This is an hourly position. In addition, this position will coordinate veterinary appointments, place reminder and follow up calls and enter data into databases. Full-Time Animal Control Officer
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking an experienced animal control officer to work at our Animal Care and Control Center in Des Moines full time (will include weekend day(s) to start). Qualified candidates should have experience, a high level of skill, be able to work independently in a fast paced environment, have excellent communication skills, and be able to work as a team. Prior animal handling experience is required, experience as an animal control officer is preferred. Must be able to meet physical demands of the position, being able to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Must be able to climb and balance. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; frequently be able to lift/move up to 50 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must have a valid Iowa’s drivers license and good driving record.

Full-Time Veterinary Technician/Assistant - ARL Main
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a veterinary technician to work in our surgical area full time. Qualified candidates should ideally be certified. Years of practical experience will be considered in lieu of certification. Candidates should possess a high level of skill, be able to work independently in a fast paced environment, have excellent communication skills, possess a keen attention to detail, be a quick learner and be able to work as a team member. The ability to lift and carry animals up to 55 pounds is required. Prior animal shelter experience is a plus. We offer competitive pay and benefits and good working environment. Part-Time Pet Help Center Counselor - ARL Main
Does making a difference in the lives of animals every day sound like your calling? We have an opportunity that fits that drive. We are seeking a Part Time Pet Help Center Counselor (Friday 9a-6p and Saturday 9a-6p) to assist the public in a compassionate and empathetic manner in our Pet Help Center (PHC). As a PHC you will assist clients in the process of relinquishing animals including, but not limited to:
- Advising clients on ARL of Iowa admission and end of life policies and procedures.
- Counsel owners on their animals’ health and behavior evaluations.
- Maintain database by entering accurate information on owners and their animals.
- Scheduling admissions, vet evaluations, community service workers, and end of life services.
- Update animal information and maintain individual animal records through database systems and internal shelter paperwork.
You will play a key role in the ARL's desire to keep pets in their loving homes through compassionate counseling, affordable services and educational resources. You will both assist and connect pet owners in need with ARL consultants who may provide helpful resources to those individuals who want to keep their pet, but for a variety of reasons, may be struggling. These resources may allow many of these owners to keep their pet(s) in their home.
The ARL’s goal is to provide a consistent, positive customer experience to all customers To be considered:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two years of experience in a customer service, call center or receptionist position.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Willingness to learn new things and/or to be cross trained in other departments.
- Applicants should demonstrate strong interpersonal and customer service skills, flexibility, and be able to adapt in stressful situations.
- Experience in animal handling is preferred.

Part-Time Animal & Customer Care Associate - ARL South
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is seeking one Animal & Customer Care Associate primarily for our ARL South location in Southridge Mall, but will float between South and West locations. Applicants must be willing/able to work with all types of animals, as they are responsible for cleaning animals as well. Applicants must also have strong customer service, multitasking, and organizational skills, ability to work in a fast paced team-oriented environment, and preferably have experience with animals in a personal or professional setting. Part-Time TheraPets Intern
Through the ARL’s TheraPets program, volunteers and their pets are certified as a team to visit participating local facilities to make a difference in the lives of those they meet.
Position Summary: To serve as an assistant to the TheraPets Coordinator to help develop and implement goals and objectives for the TheraPets program. The goal of this program is to promote awareness of Animal Assisted Interactions in our community, to provide certification of Therapy Pet Teams and to support our volunteers through the certification process and beyond.
SCHEDULE: Minimum of 90 day term with 10-24 hours each week. Hours to be completed in 4-8 hours blocks. (Flexible scheduling)
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook
The ability to write clearly and accurately using proper grammar
Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
Excellent communication skills and strong collaborative people skills
Ability to keep efficient records using computers for data base management
Willingness to work on evenings and weekends for special projects/events and to meet emerging project needs

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a highly motivated, organized individual to serve as a Special Events Intern. Part-Time Humane Education Intern- Summer 2018
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a highly motivated, organized individual to serve as our Humane Education Intern during the summer of 2018. Applicants should be very detail-oriented with excellent communication skills, enjoy working with kids and adults and have a passion education. This position is unpaid with a minimum of 8 hours per week. The intern will assist with the planning and executing of all educational programs such as classroom programs, Girl Scouts, Tales with Tails, Litter-ary Club and off-site events along with a variety of other duties as needed by the department and the intern’s desired outcomes.
Summer interns must be available to work during summer camps:
June 11-14 from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
June 25-28 from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
