Full-Time Positions

Animal Care Technician

Want to be part of an exciting job here at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa? You will be responsible for direct animal care, enrichment and most importantly helping our animals find their forever home! We are now hiring full-time Animal Care Technicians to work with all types of animals.

Work is performed in a shelter and in an outdoor environment with a variety of weather conditions. There is frequent bending, reaching, squatting and kneeling required while performing cleaning duties. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds at any time. There is exposure to cleaning chemicals, possible animal bites, odors and diseases of animals, possibly contagious.

Ideal candidates will have the following:

  • Animal handling experience
  • Animal husbandry or relevant education
  • Willingness to learn proper animal care and cleaning procedures (training will be provided)
  • Ability to endure long periods of time standing, with limited breaks
  • Team player with strong communication skills

Customer Experience Associate - Adoption Team

Want to be part of an exciting team at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa? You will be responsible for customer care, animal care, promoting our events/services and most importantly helping our animals find their forever home! We are now hiring full time Customer Experience Associates for our Adoption Team.

Ideal candidates will have the following:

  • 1-2 years working in customer service
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Passion for animals
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication skills and openness to change
  • Ability to promote products and services to customers
  • Willingness to learn proper animal care and cleaning procedures (training will be provided)

Human Resources and Training Coordinator

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a full time Human Resources and Training Coordinator. The perfect candidate for this position should have 3+ years of experience in HR work and have additional background with coordinating and leading training programs; as well as experience with recruiting staff. The ideal candidate would have experience with doing Payroll for 100+ employees as well. Experience with ADP HRIS is beneficial. This position will be located at our Main office in Des Moines and requires the person to be in the office Monday-Friday due to the nature of the work.

Qualified candidates should have earned a degree or certification relating to Human Resources. Years of practical experience will be considered in lieu of certification. Candidates should possess a high level of skill, be able to work independently in a fast paced environment, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, have knowledge of employment laws and regulations and HR best practices; be able to multi-task; have some background with accounting and payroll, have energy and positive attitude in recruiting other ARL team members.

ARL offers competitive pay, benefits, including a 401K, and fun and creative working environment. Pay will be commensurate with experience and skills; but base pay will be in the range of $45,000-$55,000/year. Supervisor of Foster & Transport

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking an outgoing, motivated professional that can oversee our Foster Care Program & Transport Program.

The Supervisor of Foster & Transport ensures that the animals and customers are being served efficiently by staff members and volunteers. This position is responsible for managing and overseeing the Foster Care Program including crisis and kitten care. In addition, this position is responsible for managing relationships with Transfer Partners to ensure successful transfers occur as planned. The position has one direct report: Foster & Transport Assistant.

Required qualifications for the position include:

  • 2-3 years of customer service experience
  • Experience at animal shelter, vet clinic or animal boarding facility
  • Demonstrated experience in managing multiple projects/programs and people

In addition, ideal candidates will have the following:

  • Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Highly developed organizational skills
  • Ability to work with multiple departments to complete tasks/projects
  • Affection for animals and concern for their welfare
  • Prior leadership experience

This is a full-time, exempt position on our leadership team. The shelter is open 7 days a week, so flexibility to work weekends and some evenings will be essential. TheraPets Intern

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking an individual to serve as an intern to work alongside the TheraPets Coordinator to help develop and implement goals and objectives for the TheraPets program. The goal of this program is to promote awareness of Animal Assisted Interactions in our community, to provide certification of Therapy Pet Teams and to support our current TheraPets teams.

  • Learn about the Human-Animal Bond & all aspects of Animal Assisted Therapy including the impact it has on our community
  • Develop strong communication skills
  • Learn about animal behavior & body language

This internship requires a minimum 90-day commitment with 10-24 hours each week. Hours are flexible and are to be completed in 4-8 hours blocks. This internship position is unpaid.

Community Outreach Intern

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking an individual to fill the position of Community Outreach Intern. This internship provides the opportunity to take part in engaging communities and empowering pet owners and volunteers to be leaders in their communities. A major part of this position will include interacting with the public at ARL locations and at outreach events in the community. Our goal is to increase community awareness and owner responsibility in at risk and under-served communities.

  • Work extensively with the public to help provide services and help as needed in an effort to keep pets in their homes.
  • Conduct follow ups with outreach clients for testimonials
  • Represent ARL at Mobile Pet Food Pantry

Part-Time Special Events Intern

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a highly motivated, organized individual to serve as a Special Events Intern. Applicants should be very detail-oriented and have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines. This position is unpaid and is a set 90 day minimum term with 8-16 hours each week. The intern will assist with special event projects and pre-event logistics, call on vendors, businesses, and event attendees when needed, procurement, and other projects depending on the intern’s desired outcome. Part-Time Volunteer Coordination Intern

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is seeking a highly motivated, organized individual with both people and pet-friendly social skills to serve as a Volunteer Coordination Intern. This position is unpaid and is a set 90-day minimum term with 8-16 hours each week. As an intern you will gain valuable experience in communications, data collection, promotions, people management and training. This unpaid internship has room for a flexible schedule and will give you professional work experience in the non-profit sector. Responsibilities include: assisting with volunteer training and events, communication with the volunteer base, database maintenance, and other projects depending on the intern’s desired outcome.
