Full-Time Positions

Full-Time Manager of Vounteer Services
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a vibrant and passionate individual to serve as the Manager of Volunteer Services. This position prepares and leads approximately 3,000 volunteers to serve alongside ARL staff as we care for more than 11,000 animals who arrive at our doors each year.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Continually research innovations in volunteer management
  • Recruit, supervise, evaluate and encourage volunteers in all ARL programs and all areas needed by the ARL
  • Organize and conduct volunteer orientations
  • Design and maintain volunteer application and on-boarding process
  • Design and maintain update/volunteer handbook
  • Design, research and implement ongoing recognition and appreciation events and program
  • Study and standardize volunteer procedures to improve efficiency
  • Motivate all volunteers to meet and exceed ARL standards
  • Coordinate volunteer operations with other departments/supervisors/program chairs
  • Responsible for over-site of volunteer training by various departments
  • Establish ongoing liaison with corporations, schools and other community organizations to facilitate recruitment of volunteers

Candidates are required to have prior experience creating and implementing volunteer programs, experience in non-profit management and program development, or demonstrated success leading and motivating teams. Candidates are also required to have effective training and presentation skills as this position delivers training and presentations on a weekly basis to volunteers, customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

A minimum of 1-2 years is a supervisory role is preferred.

Animal experience is not required. This position works in a fast-paced environment with sometimes short deadlines and works with a variety of staff stakeholders so demonstrated success in problem-solving, working both independently and within a team, and organizational skills are a must. NEW OPENING: Full-time Veterinary Surgical Technician/Assistant. NO WEEKENDS AND VERY COMPETITIVE PAY
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a veterinary technician to work in our surgical area full time. This position is perfect for a candidate who wants a great job, a career working with animals and weekends off! Qualified candidates should ideally be certified, but years of practical experience will be considered in lieu of certification. Candidates should possess a high level of skill, be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, have excellent communication skills, possess keen attention to detail, be a quick learner and be able to work as part of a team. The ability to lift and carry animals up to 55 pounds is required. Prior animal shelter experience is a plus. We offer VERY competitive pay specific to a veterinary surgical technician, benefits, including 401(k), and a good work environment. Finance Director
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a full time Finance Director. The perfect candidate for this position will have 3+ years of experience in finance and accounting and additional background in IT-related programs. This position is responsible for overseeing and leading the ARL’s accounting program, overseeing others on the team in this area, and playing a role in budgeting and long-range planning related to budgeting. Additionally this position oversees the payroll function for over 100 employees. This position is located at our Main office in Des Moines and requires the person to be in the office Monday-Friday due to the nature of the work. Qualified candidates should have a CPA degree at a minimum. An MBA degree or additional certifications relating to finance and accounting are a plus. Candidates should possess a high level of skill, be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be able to multitask, have a background in accounting and payroll, and have energy, a positive attitude and leadership skills. Full-time Medical/Veterinary Technician
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking an experienced veterinary technician to work full time in our medical area. This position will require working some weekends. Qualified candidates should have some relevant experience, be able to work independently in a fast paced environment, have excellent communication skills, and be able to work as a team. Prior animal shelter experience and/or animal handling experience preferred but not required. Competitive pay, benefits, and a great working environment. Certified veterinary technicians a plus.

Part-Time Positions

Part-time Customer Experience Associate
Want to be part of the most exciting job at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa? The ARL is now hiring part-time (and full-time) Customer Experience Associates. Job duties include being responsible for customer care, animal care, and – most important – helping pets find their forever homes! Ideal candidates will have 1+ years working in customer service, possess basic animal handling skills (training will be provided), and be detail-oriented. A variety of shifts and hours are available. Part-time Medical/Veterinary Technician
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a medical/veterinary technician to work in our medical area part time, including weekends. Qualified candidates should have animal handling and veterinary technician experience, be able to work independently in a fast paced environment, have excellent communication skills, and be able to work as a team. Certified veterinary technician a plus but not required. At least 1 year of directly related experience as a veterinary technician in shelter medicine, a spay/neuter clinic, a wellness clinic or a private veterinary practice is preferred. Animal handling and husbandry experience is highly desired. Candidates must possess a stable work history and be able to work well with internal staff and clients, as well as external clients.

Part-time Animal Care Technician
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a part-time Animal Care Technician. This position will include all shifts and weekends, averaging from 20-30 hours per week. The position is at the ARL Main location and must be willing/able to work with all types of animals. Internships

TheraPets Internship, Community Program (Fall 2019)
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking an individual to serve as an intern to work alongside the TheraPets Coordinator to help develop and implement goals and objectives for the TheraPets program. The goal of this program is to promote awareness of Animal Assisted Interactions in our community, to provide certification of Therapy Pet Teams and to support our current TheraPets teams.

  • Learn about the Human-Animal Bond & all aspects of Animal Assisted Therapy including the impact it has on our community
  • Develop strong communication skills
  • Learn about animal behavior & body language

This internship requires a minimum 90-day committment with 10-24 hours each week. Hours are flexible and are to be completed in 4-8 hours blocks. This internship position is unpaid.

Humane Education, Community Program (Fall 2019)
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a highly motivated, organized individual to serve as our Humane Education Intern. Humane education serves as a resource for the community to promote compassion and respect for all living things. Pet responsibility and pet safety are the foundation for this process. Applicants should be very detail-oriented with excellent communication skills, enjoy working with kids and adults and have a passion for education.

The intern will assist with the planning and execution of all educational programs such as; classroom programs, Girl Scouts, Tales with Tails, Litter-ary Club and off-site events along with a variety of other duties as needed by the department and the intern’s desired outcomes.

This internship requires a minimum 90-day committment with 10-24 hours each week. Hours are flexible and are to be completed in 4-8 hours blocks. This internship position is unpaid.

Community Outreach, Community Program (Fall 2019)
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking an individual to fill the position of Community Outreach Intern. This internship provides the opportunity to take part in engaging communities and empowering pet owners and volunteers to be leaders in their communities. A major part of this position will include interacting with the public at ARL locations and at outreach events in the community. Our goal is to increase community awareness and owner responsibility in at risk and under-served communities.

  • Work extensively with the public to help provide services and help as needed in an effort to keep pets in their homes.
  • Conduct follow ups with outreach clients for testimonials
  • Represent ARL at Mobile Pet Food Pantry

Part-time Marketing & Graphic Design Intern - 2019
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a highly motivated, creative individual to serve as a Graphic Design Intern for the Marketing team. Applicants should have strong graphic design skills for both print and web and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines. The intern will be exposed to all facets of marketing for Iowa's largest non-profit animal shelter and will complete work such as designing promotions for events, creating facility signage, website content updating, some social media involvement, creating materials for ARL programs, and so much more. The candidate should have a solid understanding of Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop. This position is unpaid and is a set 90 day minimum term with 8-16 hours each week with flexibility to fit your schedule. Part-Time Special Events Intern
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a highly motivated, organized individual to serve as a Special Events Intern. Applicants should be very detail-oriented and have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines. This position is unpaid and is a set 90 day minimum term with 8-16 hours each week. The intern will assist with special event projects and pre-event logistics, call on vendors, businesses, and event attendees when needed, procurement, and other projects depending on the intern’s desired outcome. Part-Time Volunteer Coordination Intern
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is seeking a highly motivated, organized individual with both people and pet-friendly social skills to serve as a Volunteer Coordination Intern. This position is unpaid and is a set 90-day minimum term with 8-16 hours each week. As an intern you will gain valuable experience in communications, data collection, promotions, people management and training. This unpaid internship has room for a flexible schedule and will give you professional work experience in the non-profit sector. Responsibilities include: assisting with volunteer training and events, communication with the volunteer base, database maintenance, and other projects depending on the intern’s desired outcome.
