Full-Time Positions

Director of Operations
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a full time Director of Operations. The perfect candidate for this position should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. The Director of Operations is responsible for assisting with planning, implementation and oversight of programs of the Operations Division of the ARL. Act as a member of the ARL’s Director Staff Team and work with the team to set organizational goals. Monitor the Operations division’s work and evaluate results to ensure the ARL’s objectives and requirements are met and conform to the needs and the mission of the ARL. This position will be located at our Main office in Des Moines, Iowa. Candidates should possess a high level of skill, be able to work independently in a fast paced environment, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, have knowledge of animal shelters, best practices; be able to multi-task; have energy and a positive attitude. The ARL is an award winning progressive animal shelter.

Dog Training Coordinator, Full-Time
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is seeking a qualified individual to oversee the Dog Training Department. This is a full-time position with a schedule of 40 hours a week Tuesday-Saturday. Candidate will be responsible for providing reward-based training and behavior assistance to both the shelter and community behavior programs; providing training for ARL staff and volunteers who care for shelter pets; conducting group and private training classes for the public; conducting behavior modification treatments; operating the Behavior Helpline; upholding the values and mission of the ARL; and, above all, practicing the humane treatment of all animals. Candidates should have a CPDT-KA (or equivalent) or actively working towards obtaining certification. At least one year or more of experience teaching group training classes or private lessons is required.

Qualifications:

  • CPDT-KA (or equivalent) or actively working towards obtaining certification
  • At least one year or more of experience teaching group training classes or private lessons
  • Experience working in a shelter, rescue, or pet daycare preferred
  • College degree preferred
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions including specific behavior modification protocols

  • Ability to solve problems quickly, thoughtfully and in a calm and mature manner
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Strong computer and database skills and an ability to learn shelter specific computer software
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook

Physical Demands:

  • Requires standing and/or walking for long periods of time
  • Requires bending, stretching, frequent lifting of 40 pounds and animals of moderate weight
  • Requires physical dexterity to acceptably manage the animals and preform job duties

Full Time Pet Help Center Counselor - 2 Openings
Does making a difference in the lives of animals every day sound like your calling? We have an opportunity that fits that drive. We are seeking two Full Time Pet Help Center Counselors to assist the public in a compassionate and empathetic manner in our Pet Help Center (PHC). One position is Sunday-Thursday and the other is Tuesday-Saturday, both with weekly rotating hours of 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. As a PHC you will assist clients in the process of relinquishing animals including, but not limited to:

  • Advising clients on ARL of Iowa admission and end of life policies and procedures.
  • Counsel owners on their animals’ health and behavior evaluations.
  • Maintain database by entering accurate information on owners and their animals.
  • Scheduling admissions, vet evaluations, community service workers, and end of life services.
  • Update animal information and maintain individual animal records through database systems and internal shelter paperwork.

You will play a key role in the ARL's desire to keep pets in their loving homes through compassionate counseling, affordable services and educational resources. You will both assist and connect pet owners in need with ARL consultants who may provide helpful resources to those individuals who want to keep their pet, but for a variety of reasons, may be struggling. These resources may allow many of these owners to keep their pet(s) in their home. The ARL’s goal is to provide a consistent, positive customer experience to all customers To be Considered:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of experience in a customer service, call center or receptionist position.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Willingness to learn new things and/or to be cross trained in other departments.
  • Applicants should demonstrate strong interpersonal and customer service skills, flexibility, and be able to adapt in stressful situations.
  • Experience in animal handling is preferred.

Human Resources and Training Manager
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a full time Human Resources and Training Manager. The perfect candidate for this position should have 3+ years of experience in HR work and have additional background with coordinating and leading training programs; as well as experience with recruiting staff. The ideal candidate would have experience with doing payroll for 100+ employees as well. This position will be located at our Main office in Des Moines; and requires the person to be in the office Monday-Friday due to the nature of the work.

Qualified candidates should have earned a degree or certification relating to Human Resources. Years of practical experience will be considered in lieu of certification. Candidates should possess a high level of skill, be able to work independently in a fast paced environment, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, have knowledge of employment laws and regulations and HR best practices; be able to multi-task; have some background with accounting and payroll, have energy and positive attitude in recruiting other ARL team members.

NEW OPENING: Full-time Veterinary Surgical Technician/Assistant. NO WEEKENDS AND VERY COMPETITIVE PAY
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a veterinary technician to work in our surgical area full time. This position is perfect for a candidate who wants a great job, a career working with animals and weekends off! Qualified candidates should ideally be certified, but years of practical experience will be considered in lieu of certification. Candidates should possess a high level of skill, be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, have excellent communication skills, possess keen attention to detail, be a quick learner and be able to work as part of a team. The ability to lift and carry animals up to 55 pounds is required. Prior animal shelter experience is a plus. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking an experienced veterinary technician to work full time in our medical area. This position will require working some weekends. Qualified candidates should have some relevant experience, be able to work independently in a fast paced environment, have excellent communication skills, and be able to work as a team. Prior animal shelter experience and/or animal handling experience preferred but not required. Competitive pay, benefits, and a great working environment. Certified veterinary technicians a plus.

Part-Time Positions


Part-time Medical/Veterinary Technician
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a medical/veterinary technician to work in our medical area part time, including weekends. Qualified candidates should have animal handling and veterinary technician experience, be able to work independently in a fast paced environment, have excellent communication skills, and be able to work as a team. Certified veterinary technician a plus but not required. At least 1 year of directly related experience as a veterinary technician in shelter medicine, a spay/neuter clinic, a wellness clinic or a private veterinary practice is preferred. Animal handling and husbandry experience is highly desired. Candidates must possess a stable work history and be able to work well with internal staff and clients, as well as external clients.

Part-time Animal Care Technician
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a part-time Animal Care Technician. This position will include all shifts and weekends, averaging from 20-30 hours per week. The position is at the ARL Main location and must be willing/able to work with all types of animals. Internships

Part-Time Strategic Animal Programs Intern (Winter/Spring 2018-19)
Do you have an interest in working with people, the drive to make a difference in the Des Moines community, and a passion for animal welfare? The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is seeking highly motivated individuals to serve as interns with our strategic animal programs team. Our interns would be exposed to all aspects of the ARL’s strategic animal programs, including Therapets, Community Outreach, Humane Education, and Animal Cruelty Intervention. The ideal candidate would be detail-oriented, flexible, proficient in Microsoft Office, and have the ability to work in a fast-pace environment. This position is unpaid and is a set 90 day minimum term with 8-16 hours each week. We are willing to work with academic advisors so students can receive credit for the internship. Part-time Marketing & Graphic Design Intern - 2019
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a highly motivated, creative individual to serve as a Graphic Design Intern for the Marketing team. Applicants should have strong graphic design skills for both print and web and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines. Part-Time Special Events Intern
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a highly motivated, organized individual to serve as a Special Events Intern. Applicants should be very detail-oriented and have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines. This position is unpaid and is a set 90 day minimum term with 8-16 hours each week.
