Full-Time Positions

Human Resources and Training Manager
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a full time Human Resources and Training Manager. The perfect candidate for this position should have 3+ years of experience in HR work and have additional background with coordinating and leading training programs; as well as experience with recruiting staff. The ideal candidate would have experience with doing payroll for 100+ employees as well. This position will be located at our Main office in Des Moines; and requires the person to be in the office Monday-Friday due to the nature of the work.

Qualified candidates should have earned a degree or certification relating to Human Resources. Years of practical experience will be considered in lieu of certification. Candidates should possess a high level of skill, be able to work independently in a fast paced environment, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, have knowledge of employment laws and regulations and HR best practices; be able to multi-task; have some background with accounting and payroll, have energy and positive attitude in recruiting other ARL team members.

Full Time Pet Helpline Associate
Are you driven by making a difference in the lives of animals every day? We have an opportunity that fits that drive. We are seeking a Full Time Pet Helpline Associate (PHA) to assist the public in a compassionate and empathetic manner via phone in our Pet Help Center. As a PHA you will respond to incoming phone calls including, but not limited to:

  • Education and providing community resources.
  • Scheduling appointments for our admissions process.
  • Scheduling appointments for our spay/neuter programs.
  • Sign-up and follow-up on outreach communications to clients who receive spay/neuter services, cremation and community involvement.

You will play a key role in the ARL's desire to keep pets in their loving homes through compassionate counseling, affordable services and educational resources. You will both assist and connect pet owners in need with ARL consultants who may provide helpful resources to those individuals who want to keep their pet, but for a variety of reasons, may be struggling. These resources may allow many of these owners to keep their pet(s) in their home. The ARL’s goal is to provide a consistent, positive customer experience to all callers and customers.

To be Considered:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of experience in a customer service, call center or receptionist position.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Learn other technology as necessary for the job.
  • Applicants should demonstrate strong interpersonal and customer service skills, flexibility, and be able to adapt in stressful situations.
  • Conversational Spanish is a strong plus, but not required.
  • Experience in animal handling is preferred.

NEW OPENING: Full-time Veterinary Surgical Technician/Assistant
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a veterinary technician to work in our surgical area full time. This position is perfect for a candidate who wants a great job, a career working with animals and weekends off! Qualified candidates should ideally be certified. Years of practical experience will be considered in lieu of certification. Candidates should possess a high level of skill, be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, have excellent communication skills, possess keen attention to detail, be a quick learner and be able to work as part of a team. The ability to lift and carry animals up to 55 pounds is required. Prior animal shelter experience is a plus. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a medical/veterinary technician to work in our medical area full time, including weekends. Qualified candidates should have animal handling and veterinary technician experience, be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, have excellent communication skills, and be able to work as part of a team. Veterinary technician certification is a plus but not required. At least 1 year of directly related experience as a veterinary technician in shelter medicine, a spay/neuter clinic, a wellness clinic or a private veterinary practice is preferred. Animal handling and husbandry experience is highly desired. Candidates must possess a stable work history and be able to work well with internal staff and clients, as well as external clients.

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking an experienced animal control officer to work at our Animal Care and Control Center in Des Moines full time (will include weekend day(s) to start). Qualified candidates should have experience, a high level of skill, be able to work independently in a fast paced environment, have excellent communication skills, and be able to work as a team. Prior animal handling experience is required, experience as an animal control officer is preferred. Must be able to meet physical demands of the position, being able to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Must be able to climb and balance. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; frequently be able to lift/move up to 50 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must have a valid Iowa’s drivers license and good driving record.

Part-time Animal & Customer Care Associate - ARL South
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is seeking one Animal & Customer Care Associate primarily for our ARL South location in Southridge Mall, but will float between South and West locations. Applicants must be willing/able to work with all types of animals, as they are responsible for cleaning animals as well. Applicants must also have strong customer service, multitasking, and organizational skills, ability to work in a fast paced team-oriented environment, and preferably have experience with animals in a personal or professional setting. This position is responsible for all facets of customer service, maintaining a safe and healthy environment, processing transactions, and precise record keeping. Part-time Animal Care Technician
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a part-time Animal Care Technician. This position will include all shifts and weekends, averaging from 20-30 hours per week. The position is at the ARL Main location and must be willing/able to work with all types of animals. Internships

Part-time TheraPets Intern
Through the ARL’s TheraPets program, volunteers and their pets are certified as a team to visit participating local facilities to make a difference in the lives of those they meet.

Position Summary: To serve as an assistant to the TheraPets Coordinator to help develop and implement goals and objectives for the TheraPets program. The goal of this program is to promote awareness of animal assisted interactions in our community, to provide certification of Therapy Pet Teams and to support our volunteers through the certification process and beyond.

SCHEDULE: Minimum of 90-day term with 10-24 hours each week. Hours to be completed in 4-8 hours blocks. (Flexible scheduling)

Qualifications:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook

  • The ability to write clearly and accurately using proper grammar

  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent communication skills and strong collaborative people skills

  • Ability to keep efficient records using computers for data base management

  • Willingness to work on evenings and weekends for special projects/events and to meet emerging project needs

  • Animal handling experience is beneficial, but not required

Part-time Marketing & Graphic Design Intern - Fall 2018
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a highly motivated, creative individual to serve as a Graphic Design Intern for the Marketing team. Applicants should have strong graphic design skills for both print and web and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines. The intern will be exposed to all facets of marketing for Iowa's largest non-profit animal shelter. This position is unpaid and is a set 90 day minimum term with 8-16 hours each week. Part-Time Special Events Intern
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a highly motivated, organized individual to serve as a Special Events Intern. Applicants should be very detail-oriented and have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while meeting deadlines. This position is unpaid and is a set 90 day minimum term with 8-16 hours each week. The intern will assist with special event projects and pre-event logistics, call on vendors, businesses, and event attendees when needed, procurement, and other projects depending on the intern’s desired outcome.
